Here's the town theme from Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest on the NES, possibly better known as The Silence of the Daylight. This tune is fairly maniacal, always featuring a three part melody with frequent use of counterpoint, and a few chromatic notes here and there. This was definitely one of those songs where after selecting the tempo to track the drums, I hoped I'd be able to actually be able to play the song on the other instruments.
Each instrument voicing had its own challenges. The bass part featured a number of notes played in two octaves, which I leverage thumb thumping for, but these notes were often interwoven with melodic runs within the octave. This forced me to constantly change right hand technique between thumps and traditional bass finger positions, fairly challenging for an amateur bassist like myself. The bass line features a number of tasteful chromatic notes which really drives the song melodically. The high guitar part had a particularly challenging section where the melody keeps changing between a low part and a high part two octaves higher, while the low guitar part has you shifting between a literal two octave melody and a melodic part an octave below that. These are definitely not melodies designed with guitar or electric bass in mind!
For tracking, I used my usual mic setup along with my newer MXL 603s on the hihat, and took a pocket drumming approach with some big fills on the turn around section before the song repeats. The bass was tracked direct into the DAW with the SHB-1 and God's Cab plugins I've been using for awhile now. Both guitar parts were double tracked played through the Fender Cybertwin mic'd up with an sm57. I added a wah pedal plugin on one guitar part for some added fun! For the light mastering I do on these videos, I experimented running a multiband compressor through a limiter, which I think resulted in a clearer/brighter mix than the last few.
Let me know what you think of the mix in the comments, and if you want a good laugh to see how far I've come on this Youtube channel, check out my previous Simon's Quest cover of Monster Dance from just over two years ago, I think I've come a long way!
