Sometimes movies that couldn’t be more different actually end up sharing a film location. You might not think “Billy Madison” and “X-Men” have much in common, but they both built a base around the extravagant Parkwood Estate. Then there’s Fox Plaza, which has been used as a high-flying action location in “Die Hard” and “Fight Club” as well as a much less high-octane film: “Airheads.” Flicks like “Aliens” and “Batman” have relied on the Acton Lane Power Station,” and just about every blockbuster with a diner scene has used the Quality Cafe. The Greystone Mansion is luxurious enough to act as a backdrop for characters like Norman Osborn and “The Big Lebowski,” while the natural beauty of the Vasquez Rocks acts as a perfect backdrop. If you’re wondering where the casts of “Grease,” Pretty in Pink” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” pretended to attend classes, the answer is John Marshall High School. Many of these places exist in the real world, but the crew of “Scary Movie” made a set so convincing it was used in one of the subsequent “Saw” films.
You may find yourself examining film sets a little bit more carefully from now on! Have you noticed any other scenery that seems familiar?
