Everyone will tell you that covering-up the hole on your plunge saw will improve dust collection. But is that correct?
In this video we put that to the test by seeing of there is any real difference between leaving the hole open, or covering it up.
The blade change port is there to give you access to the saw arbour when changing blades. When connected to a dust extractor, intuition says that blocking up the hole will improve dust collection at the point of generation, the blade edge. Is that true?
The experiment is empirical rather than scientific. It's what we notice on the bench that's important as the dust that escapes from the saw is a bit of a nuisance.
The saw I'm using is the Makita SP6000K with an Axminster Xcaliber blade.

Also featured in the video is the Depth Stop Indicator for Makita saws. This little gadget is also available on my website and overcomes the problem that both the corded and battery makita saw have with accounting for the thickness of the track when setting your blade depth. The little tabs add 5mm on for the track, and a second tab adds a further 3mm when using an MFT or similar set-up. Expect a video on this soon.
The Nilfisk Aero 26 wet/dry vacuum is really good, relatively inexpensive and gets good reviews. It's designed for commercial environments and has plenty of power and good airflow.
