Formed at Bron near Lyon of Polish pilots who evaded capture by the Nazis and the Soviets in the aftermath of the Invasion of Poland of 1939. It took part in the Battle of France defending the French skies along the allied armies.
By the end of April 1940 the unit received the first 20 Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 fighters and started guarding the skies around Lyon.
