Ierapetra is the most southerly town in Europe on the south east coast of Crete. It has a small fishing harbour and during the winter months some of the vessels are removed from the water to have minor work carried out. Bottom scrapes and paint jobs etc. At the entrance to the port is an old Venetian fort built sometime in the 13th century. In 1508 it was destroyed by a big earthquake.The Ottomans captured the town in 1647 and renovated the fort.
