Everybody wants to have pearly white teeth! But teeth whitening also has some risks.
One of the major risks of teeth whitening is if you have crowns or fillings on your teeth, they are not going to whiten like your real teeth will. This could lead to your teeth being different colors which will actually make them look worse, so be careful!
Another major risk is that after whitening, the teeth can be very sensitive. This sensitivity can last for a few days because the pores of your teeth are opened up by the bleaching product.
*NOTE* If you have tooth sensitivity after whitening, this typically goes away in a few hours to days. Some have reported sensitivity that lasts for a few weeks, but this is very rare, and this feeling of your teeth being sensitive to cold or hot is not permanent!
Furthermore, because your pores are open, your teeth are more susceptible to staining after whitening. Picture your tooth as a sponge that readily absorbs any liquids that may stain your teeth. So be careful and avoid this potential mistake.
If you are using a teeth whitening product that is very strong and it gets in contact with your gum tissue, it can irritate it. Also, if your gum tissue is thin, the peroxide and/or the whitening tray can irritate your gums and cause them to recede.
Quick Tip:
MI Paste can reduce tooth sensitivity after whitening
Another teeth whitening risk is that there are no long term studies that look at the effects of this bleach material on an unborn fetus. Therefore, if you are pregnant you may want to avoid teeth whitening or be extra careful to not swallow any of the bleaching material.
Here's another teeth whitening tip. Studies have shown that tooth whitening is generally more effective on yellow teeth as opposed to brown or grey teeth. So some teeth are better candidates to whiten than others.
Lastly, you want to make sure your mouth is healthy before you try to whiten your teeth. If you have gingivitis or gum disease, the whitening product can irritate your teeth and gums and cause the teeth whitening to fail.
Teeth whitening is generally a very safe and effective treatment that you can have done at a dental office or do yourself at home! This is NOT an attempt to discourage anyone from whitening their teeth, we simply wish to educate you on the potential hazards. Remember to keep your mouth healthy! You will have a healthier body.
