STORYLINE:
Rwandan infantry and helicopters on on Wednesday attacked Hutu militiamen and allies crossing into the country from the Democratic Repubic of Congo, and a military spokesman claimed 150 of the infiltrators were killed.
Local residents alerted the army after at least 300 militiamen and former government soldiers sneaked into the area of Mutura, 50 miles northwest of the capital, Kigali, on Tuesday night.
The spokesman said that using helicopter gunships and ground troops, the army killed about 150 and capturing 24 in three hours of fighting.
The casualty figures couldn't be independently verified.
Former members of the Rwandan military and the Interahamwe militia fled into refugee camps in what was then eastern Zaire in July 1994 to escape reprisals for their participation in the slaughter of more than half a (M) million minority Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus from April to July.
Since the beginning of May, the Rwandan army has intensified a crackdown on rebel bases inside neighbouring Congo, forcing them to flee into the mountains straddling the two countries.
