MUSCAT: A local court in Oman sentenced two people to prison for allegedly insulting God and religions and referred two others to another court.

In a statement issued, the country’s Public Prosecution said the Criminal Chamber of Sohar Court of Appeals issued a ruling against four people. “The investigations conducted by the Public Prosecution revealed that the convicts Ali bin Marhoon and Maryam Bint Yousef Bin Ali published writings on their personal account on social media platform Twitter and insulted God and published the same writings in one of the WhatsApp groups.”
The court on Thursday sentenced Ali to five years in prison for insulting God, while Maryam was convicted on charges of felony and insulting religions and sentenced her to three years in prison. The court also ordered to publish the verdict, confiscate their phones and to close their social media accounts and, in addition to paying legal fees.

Meanwhile, the court due to its lack of jurisdiction, also refered misdemeanor cases against Ghaith Bin Matar bin Hamad and Abdullah Bin Hassan to the competent Misdemeanor court.
