Some have asked, "If Jesus really was condemned to die for claiming to be God, how do we explain his final words on the cross?" In Mark 15:34 we read: "At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” On the face of it, this strikes us as rather strange. How can Jesus cry out to God for forsaking him if he's divine?
Christians have attempted to theologically reconcile this with the doctrine of the incarnation in various ways that are beyond the scope of this video. But what I want to argue here is that this statement by Jesus makes a lot of sense in light of the Jewish context. Jesus fulfills a prophecy of David's about the crucifixion of the Messiah and how his deliverance from death would lead to the repentance of the nations.
