Iran plans to form naval alliance with India and Pakistan (Hindi) | India Pakistan Iran Indian ocean
Iran has said it is forming a naval alliance that will include Saudi Arabia, three other Gulf states, and, surprisingly, India and Pakistan. While the shape and form of this alliance is yet to be revealed, it nonetheless represents a significant geopolitical shift underway in the Middle East. Iran has been trying to mend relations with several Gulf Arab nations following a Beijing-mediated deal between Tehran and Riyadh in March. These efforts have already seen results such as the return of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad to the Arab League.
There are two important dynamics here. First, it appears that Iran and Saudi Arabia are finally coming to the realisation that their regional proxy war is harming both. Both Riyadh and Tehran are looking at new options to manage regional equations. Second, the US has been progressively disengaging from the Middle East and pivoting towards East Asia. Thus, Washington is no longer seen as a regional problem solver. On the contrary, Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and Biden’s to not join back have cast the US as unreliable.
Enter China with its economic partnership plans for the region. Also, Washington’s pledge to create an alliance of democracies to counter autocracies in the wake of the Ukraine war sits uncomfortably with Middle East regimes. But if China’s footprint grows here, it is bad news for India, which relies on the Middle East for energy and the remittance economy. New Delhi would be far more comfortable working with Washington in the region. Therefore, it should help boost platforms like I2U2 (India, Israel, US and UAE) to stay in the Middle East game and counter China.
The coalition will also include the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Iraq
The commander of Iran’s navy Shahram Irani announced on Saturday that Tehran plans to form a naval alliance with three Gulf states, India and Pakistan.
According to Iranian media, the aim of the coalition is “to bring security” to the region.
"The countries of the region have today realized that only cooperation with each other brings security to the area," Irani was quoted as saying, adding the alliance would be formed soon.
The navy commander said the coalition would include the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, Pakistan, and India. Earlier this week, the UAE—which resumed formal relations with Iran last year—announced that it had withdrawn from the U.S.-led Combined Maritime Forces two months ago after evaluating “security cooperation with all partners.”
Iran recently restored relations with several Gulf Arab states, including Bahrain, after its rapprochement with Saudi Arabia under a China-mediated deal in March, which stressed the need for regional stability and economic cooperation.
