Boy Scout Troop 889 of Naperville’s yearly fundraiser takes the form of a Christmas tree lot near Wheatland-Salem Church.

“The scouts kind of do everything,” said Dilip Robin, the senior patrol leader of Troop 889. “We sell the trees, we also give the trees a fresh cut and make any modifications to the trees that the customers would like, cutting off branches or anything like that. And then the scouts also tie the trees to the top of the car as well, which is an integral part of the whole process.”

It’s an opportunity to earn salesmanship merit badges while gaining valuable hands-on work and leadership experience.

“They take charge and we empower them to be the ones that are running their activities so they kind of own and learn from it,” said Dan Vitous, the scout master of Troop 889. “They learn teamwork, they learn responsibility, and that’s kind of what we hope they get out of it.”

The lot has fraser, balsam, and fraser-balsam cross firs which range from six to 12 feet tall to make sure you have the perfect fit for your home.

The proceeds from the tree lot cover the operating costs of Troop 889 and help cover the scouts’ activity expenses.
