Xpeng Aeroht, the aerial vehicle division of Chinese automotive giant Xpeng, has officially broken ground on its cutting-edge manufacturing facility in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, setting a bold global precedent in the mass production of modular flying cars.
This state-of-the-art plant will focus on the assembly of the Land Aircraft Carrier model, with a target production capacity of 10,000 units annually. According to Zhao Deli, founder of Xpeng Aeroht, the new manufacturing base will not only push the boundaries of aerospace innovation but will also set a global benchmark for environmentally sustainable production and advanced artificial intelligence integration in the flying car industry.
Spanning an initial area of 180,000 square meters, the facility will feature four major workshops dedicated to composite materials, joint fitting, painting, assembly, and additional critical infrastructure. Zhao emphasized that the factory's design is optimized for efficiency, with a streamlined layout that consolidates workshops and logistics, reducing waste and maximizing production speed. This will allow Xpeng Aeroht to lead the way in both scale and sustainability.
The production line will employ an advanced traceability system to maintain rigorous aviation safety standards, ensuring that every component, from sourcing to assembly, meets the highest levels of quality control. Furthermore, the plant will be a model of sustainability, featuring solar power generation, energy-efficient equipment in high-energy areas, and a real-time digital energy management system to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
The modular flying car itself is an engineering marvel. It combines a ground module, which provides transportation capabilities on the road, and an air module, which can autonomously separate and take off vertically for low-altitude flight. This innovative design promises to revolutionize urban mobility, providing a seamless transition between ground and air transport.
The launch of this flying car manufacturing facility marks a major milestone in Guangzhou’s ambition to lead the development of the low-altitude economy. According to Shao Jingbo, deputy director of the Guangzhou Development District Administrative Committee, the city's partnership with Xpeng Aeroht will drive the industry forward, positioning Guangzhou as a global hub for the low-altitude economy.
The Guangdong provincial government's action plan aims to establish a world-leading low-altitude economy by 2026, with an economic scale exceeding 300 billion yuan ($41.4 billion). This ambitious goal will be supported by government investment funds, market-driven financing, and strategic collaboration between leading enterprises like Xpeng Aeroht and local government bodies.
Xpeng Aeroht has already achieved significant milestones, including the successful manned test flight of its air module.
While the full integration of flying cars into urban air mobility may still take some years, Xpeng Aeroht is confident that its modular flying car for individual users will take flight within the next five years, bridging the gap between road and air travel in urban areas. As Vice President Qiu Mingquan stated, "The land module can already be driven, and the air module is ready to take off in specific areas—it's only a matter of time before flying cars become part of everyday life."
