#Hurricane #Milton churned toward western #Florida as a potentially lethal Category 5 storm, with winds strong enough to tear homes apart and storm surge capable of swamping some coastal cities.

Milton is on track to make landfall late Wednesday night or early Thursday local time, according to the US National Hurricane Center. Meanwhile, Florida officials have urged millions of residents to evacuate as soon as possible to avoid the effects of what could be one of the worst hurricanes on record.

Winds from the storm roared at 160 miles (260 kilometers) per hour as it barreled across the Gulf of Mexico, the NHC said in advisory at 5 a.m. New York time. The center of the storm was located about 300 miles southwest of Tampa.
