Why Is the 28th of October a National Holiday in Greece? | “Ohi Day”/ “No” Day | The 28th of October is a national holiday in Greece. It is related to World War II and specifically the date Greece entered the war (28.10.1940). Schools, public facilities, and most businesses do not operate on that day. Military and student parades take place to commemorate the deaths of those who fought in the war.
The Day Italy Tried to Invade Greece
On October 28, 1940, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini’s army unsuccessfully attempted to invade Greece. Mussolini was warned by his own generals that the invasion would lead to catastrophe and humiliation.
Why is the 28th of October called “Ohi Day” in some countries?
“Ohi” (Όχι) means “No” in Greek. The 28th of October is the anniversary of “Ohi” because it also marks Greece’s rejection of Mussolini’s ultimatum. The latter demanded Greece to allow Axis forces to enter certain strategic territories.
Rumor had it that Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas replied with a laconic “Ohi”; his actual reply, however, was the French phrase: “Alors, c’est la guerre!” (Then it’s war!).
