I've been a full time programmer for 10 years now and a hobby programmer for even longer. In this video, I will tell you how I got started and how programming has changed my life
How it all started
The first time I heard about programming was when my oldest brother asked me when I was going to start programming. But I had no idea what it meant. I guess it took a few years before I got into it. I started with HTML, CSS and a bit of JavaScript. After I learned the basics, I built a ton of weird sites like a fan page for our trampoline club, a page for cheat codes for games and similar. Everything was hardcoded, and then I heard about PHP. After I started learning PHP, I have also learned a ton of other languages like python, c++, c#, objective-c, lua and probably even more. Plus all of the frameworks I use.
My first job
I never got an education, so the first job I ever had was a job where I worked in a freezer unloading fish. So a fishing boat came to the dock, we went into the freezer, lifted it onto pallets and a lift took it on land. This was really hard work, and we often worked for 16 hours per day and similar.
A way out of the hard work
I started doing a little bit of freelancing, built my own CMS and a place where freelancers could find work in Norway. I earned a little bit money from the freelancing, but not much. Since I didn't have an education, I didn't have the courage to apply for jobs either. But one day, I decided that I should at least try to apply for a job. A few hours later, I got an email with positive feedback and we decided to have an interview. The day of the interview came, and I was really nervous. Luckily, I had my girlfriend there with me who supported me and helped me to get enough courage to go in and complete the job interview. Already during the interview the boss offered me a position there, and of course I said yes. I was really happy.I was finally a programmer.
Since that, I have had three other jobs as a full time developer.
In these different jobs, I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of cool clients and built many exciting things. The most famous clients I have worked with is CocaCola and Nobel peace prize.
CocaCola is my favorite drink in the whole world and I thought it was really cool that I got to do some work for them. It was just some migrations stuff where I converted XML to a different type of XML, but at least it was CocaCola. For the nobel peace prize, I built most of the old web site and also their nominations system. There are also a lot of other cool clients I've worked with, but not too many of them are international.
What I can do with my knowledge?
With all the knowledge I have, I have been able to build and work on many awesome side projects as well. I have built many mobile games like Scolors and Colorlane. I have built a mobile app called FinnFido which is an app for lost and found pets. And maybe the thing that has meant most to me is Code With Stein. I receive incredible much positive feedback and I just love making content for my channel. I can live where ever I want
I have worked remotely since 2013, and most of this time I have spent in Spain. Norway is usually really cold, and that is not my cup of tea. Right now, I'm in Spain again with my girl friend. And we live in a self converted car. We moved into the car 7 or 8 months ago, and during this time we've experienced so much. Working remotely from the car is also really great.
Featured by Apple and Google
The two games I mentioned earlier even got featured by Apple and Google Play. I built them together with my girlfriend who designed them. The morning I woke up and saw our game on the top charts was insane. It was really weird to see it there and it was also totally unexpected. We didn't earn a lot of money from the two games, but the most important experience we got was the feeling of success.
Anyways, it's time to wrap up. I hope you enjoyed hearing about my life as a programmer and maybe it even inspired you to what you can achieve. Hit like and subscribe below if you liked the video. See you in the next video
