Drass, located in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, is India's coldest place and is often called the 'Second Coldest Inhabited Place' after Siberia. Situated at an altitude of 3,300 meters (10,827 feet) above sea level, this region stands as a testament to the icy wonders of the Himalayas.
The region experiences a cold desert climate, with winter temperatures dropping as low as -50°C. In 1995, the temperature reached an extreme of -60°C, making Drass one of the coldest inhabited places in the world. Despite such harsh conditions, the residents of Drass are known for their bravery and traditional way of life.
Drass holds great historical and strategic significance. It played a pivotal role during the 1999 India-Pakistan war. Today, tourists visit this region to admire its natural beauty, snow-clad peaks, and war memorials.
