STORYLINE:
As scientists in Indonesia warned on Tuesday that erupting Mount Merapi still posed a deadly threat to villagers living on its lava-scared slopes, survivors from the volcano's 1994 eruption relived their experiences.
In Sudimoro village, on the slopes of the volcano, villagers remembered the 1994 eruption.
Husband and wife, Maryoto and Kasiyen survived the hot gas clouds, but the physical and emotional scars remain.
Maryoto was badly burned. He explained what happened.
"The sky suddenly turned dark and the wind was blowing hard. When the hot clouds reached the rooftops of houses, there was an enormous noise. Then the clouds struck at the houses and the houses fell apart and the people were still trapped inside," he said.
Authorities on Saturday declared the highest-category threat, triggering mandatory evacuations for more than 5-thousand people living closest to the crater.
They are staying in mosques, schools and government buildings.
Maryoto's wife, Kasiyen said villagers in the path of the volcano should leave their homes, and go to the evacuation centres.
Some 200 people are still believed to be remaining in their villages on the slopes of the volcano. These are believed to be most at risk.
Poniyem, another survivor from the 1994 eruption also said that people should go to the emergency centres, and return when the threat from the volcano has receded.
A large unstable lava dome perched on the crater formed by magma from within the volcano remained in place and could yet collapse, triggering a deadly surge in ash and gas, volcanologists said.
Merapi, whose fertile slopes rise from the centre of Indonesia's densely populated Java Island, last erupted in 1994, sending a gas cloud 10 kilometres (six miles) down its flank that incinerated 60 people.
