What's up everyone! 🇲🇾 So today, I will be doing a follow-on video on my recent trip back home where I went hunting for coins in Kuching city. For those who watched my previous video, you would have seen me visit a number of antique and souvenir stores located at the beautiful Waterfront of the city. While I managed to get some Sarawak coins issued during the rule of the White Rajahs, I also discovered there are quite a number of counterfeit coins sold by these stores.
I honestly believe the stores that carry these coins offer them as souvenirs and do not intentionally retail them as genuine coins. In fact, many of the store owners openly admitted the coins are fakes. However the inexperienced and unwary coin collectors may be lead into believing these coins are genuine. In this video, I will share briefly what i saw at one of the stores which display these fake coins openly. I was fortunate they permitted me to take a quick video of the coins. I also intentionally purchased two fake coins so that I can share them with you.
The two Sarawak 50c coins were issued during the reign of Charles Brooke. They have extremely low mintage and are much sought after by collectors. The stores sold them to me for just a few dollars, a dead giveaway for fakes. Real coins would have costs thousands! While I am positive the coins are fakes, this video will give me an opportunity to demonstrate how I check the authenticity of coins with the tools I have at my disposal.
