STORYLINE
Orthodox Serbian Christians commemorated Good Friday today throughout the country.
The day, observed ahead of the most important Christian holiday of Easter, is also known as "Great Friday" in Serbia.
The holiday commemorates the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and is spent fasting and attending prayer services in church.
Residents of the nation's capital, Belgrade, passed the day in a variety of ways.
Some attended Saint Sava Church to mark the occasion while others bought Easter arts and crafts from a local market ready for Easter Sunday.
AP Television footage at one market showed Easter decorations as well as painted eggs for sale.
Painting eggs is a long-standing Orthodox Christian tradition.
For the Rebic family, who live in Belgrade, it's an occasion for the whole family to spend time together.
Mother of the family, Marija Rebic, said they colour Easter eggs on Good Friday in preparation for Sunday.
"The first egg we paint red, we call it the "house keeper", which we keep throughout the year which represents happiness and well being for our home," she said.
Rebic said the children crack the eggs on Easter Sunday, something they really look forward to.
"Cracking eggs represents how Jesus Christ with his own strength defeated death and brought eternal life and well being to everyone who believes in Christ and God's power," she told AP Television.
Good Friday, calculated according to the Julian calendar, was not only celebrated in Serbia on Friday, but also in other Orthodox Christian nations.
Orthodox Christians use a different calendar from Roman Catholics and Protestants, so their celebration of Easter usually falls on a different date.
Easter represents a period of hope for Orthodox Christians - a time when, nearly two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ was said to have risen from the grave after dying for the sins of humanity.
