Coping with the Silly Season
The holidays are upon us and perhaps the silliest part of the silly season is how we allow stress to impact on our mental health during this time. Who’s invited to Thanksgiving dinner? Who’s in charge of cooking the turkey and what are the seating arrangements to accommodate that one random guest?
We want things to be perfect over the holidays: for our family to come together and spend quality time with each other. Without any drama!
Often this creates unrealistic expectations of what will transpire, causing us to sweat the small stuff. ‘What do I need to do next?’, we ask, as we busy ourselves, oblivious to the stress that is building up, just waiting to burst at an inopportune moment.
Sometimes, the absolute best, most productive thing you can do at this time is relax. Now is the time to appreciate that less is more as you plan how to deal with the holidays.
This can start with travel as you choose an off-peak time to jump in your car and visit family. Or, if you’re the host, role-play potential scenarios (that one drunk uncle at the dinner table shooting his mouth off) and work out what to say and do in advance. Better yet, if it’s your home, set some boundaries in advance and lay down some ground rules for visiting guests.
Be assertive in what you want out of your family relationships and remember that rest is more important than ever. Plan your shopping, your cooking, and your engaging with others carefully so that it’s not one thing after the other.
It’s been another long year for all of us, and this is when the nerves can start to fray. It’s amazing how a breath of fresh air and a quick walk around the block while holding your tongue can deflate a heated family moment.
Now is the time to double down on the practices that support you — be it morning meditation, yoga, therapy, or just a phone call with a good friend you can rely on to hear you out.
And, if you are concerned about someone you love who is struggling with addiction and will not cope with the added stress and anxiety of the holiday season, then Camelback Recovery is well-versed in helping people through these trying times.
We are here to provide you and/or your loved ones the necessary tools to build a sober life. You can call us now on 480-618-5430 and we’ll even listen to your worries about those pesky Thanksgiving seating arrangements.
