End Stage Renal Disease | Symptoms to Expect Before Death
Chronic Kidney Disease or CKD is typically staged in 6 stages.
Stage 1 is a normal to high GFR (GFR of greater than 90 ml/min)
Stage 2 is mild CKD with a GFR of 60-89 ml/min
Stage 3a is moderate CKD with a GFR of 45-59 ml/min
Stage 3b is moderate CKD with a GFR of 30-44 ml/min
Stage 4 is severe CKD with a GFR of 15-29 ml/min
Stage 5 is End Stage CKD or End Stage Renal Disease with a GFR or less than 15 ml/min
Stage 5 or End Stage Kidney/Renal Disease is when the person's kidneys are no longer able to do their job of filtering the blood of excess waste products and fluid so the body can continue to function properly. At this time, some people choose to go on dialysis. Some people may be candidates for a transplant. Some choose neither, or may start dialysis and choose to later stop it. When a person with ESRD is no longer receiving dialysis, that person is typically considered appropriate for hospice care and is thought to have 6 months of less to live.
In this video we will discuss five signs and symptoms that are commonly seen in someone who is dying of end stage kidney disease (ESKD) or end stage renal disease (ESRD).
