‘Downtown’ was the only UK chart entry for Norwegian-Swedish three-piece, One 2 Many. Formed in 1987, Camilla Griehsel (vocals), Dag Kolsrud (keyboards) and Jan Gisle Ytterdal (guitar) took the track to #65 on its original 1988 release but did slightly better with a re-release in 1989, which made #43. In Norway, it was a much bigger hit, reaching #1 and staying there for five weeks. This remix was only available in the USA, where the track peaked at #37 on the Hot 100. It’s the work of Michael Hutchinson (Madonna, INXS, Jody Watley).
One 2 Many issued three other singles between 1988-89, ‘Another Man’, ‘Writing On The Wall’ and ‘Nearly There’. They all failed to chart, as did their only album, ‘Mirror’. The band had actually already split up by the time the album was released. Kolsrud, who was previously a-ha's world tour musical director (1986-1987), went on to join the band Guys in Disguise, before starting a solo career. Griehsel married British singer-songwriter Colin Vearncombe (Black) in 1990 and later went on to become an opera singer.
