EN : The siege and fall of croatian town Vukovar, on the croatian-serbian border, after a 3 months siege by the yugoslav popular army (JNA) , and its unsuccessful tank attacks in 1991, is a unique event in war history on the european continent. At the begining of the siege, on the side of the JNA and serbian paramilitary forces, were 27.362 troops, 616 tanks, and 577 armored carriers. This number increased on sept.14th 1991 to 57.154 troops, 682 tanks, and 623 armored vehicles, while during the last days of the siege, between nov.10th to nov.18th 1991 reached the unbelievable numbers of 81.884 troops, 1097 tanks, and 984 armored vehicles.
Forces of croatian defenders in arms in the city are estimated from 1800 up to 2200 members of the police , ZNG (national guard) , HOS (croatian armed forces) and other volonteers organized in the 204th brigade of the croatian army (HV) , dispatched on the 10 km long front.
Croatian forces destroyed nearly 400 tanks and other armored vehicles and 27 enemy fighter jets.
Croatian Army headquarters estimates losts of the JNA to nearly 8.000 ground troops.
In Vukovar 1.100 civilians were killed. Among them were 86 children. 2500 were injured of which 570 permanently disabled. 858 children lost 1 or both of their parents. 486 people are still missing or taken away.
According to the JNA, after the fall of Vukovar, 1.300 people were buried, pulled out of the rubble.
The 204.th brigade of the HV (croatian army) losts: 879 killed in action or missing, and 777 injured defenders. On the city of Vukovar fell 1.500.000 bombshells of all caliber, and 13.500 houses were completely destroyed. This is a TV document about these events.
