The Rioja wine region is located in the north part of Spain. This video is dedicated to all wine lovers and students of WSET level to and WSET level III. Did you know that in Rioja, there are 66 000 hectares of vines, there are 14 800 growers and 574 wineries. The city of Logrono is the official capital of the Rioja wine region. The Rioja region produces 84.4% of red wines, 10.2% of white wines, and 5.4% of rose, called in Spanish rosado. The climate of Rioja is warm continental, with some Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. Rioja also has diverse soil types, which are highly suitable for quality viticulture. The most important types of soil are: clay-limestone, ferrous-clay, and alluvial soil. There are 14 types of grapes permitted in the Rioja region, five reds, and 9 whites. The Rioja region is divided into three sub-regions, including: Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Ata, and Rioja Oriental, previously called Rioja Baja. The Rioja oriental is the warmest part of the Rioja region. The red ones are Temptanillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo, Graciano, and Maturana Tinta. The white varieties are: Viura, Tempranillo Blanco, Verdejo, Garnacha Blanca, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Maturana Blanca, Malvasía de Rioja & Turruntes also known as Albillo Mayor in Castilla-León. Did you know that |Rioja is also producing quality sparkling wines. The new category called Espumoso de Rioja was officially launched in 2017. Rioja is the oldest demarcated and regulated wine appellation in Spain and was founded on the 6th of June 1925. In 1991, Rioja was promoted to the Denominacion de Origen Calificada, which is, in fact, the highest designation for Spanish wines.
