Health Secretary branded ‘part-man, part-ostrich’ over data on excess deaths
Health Secretary Steve Barclay has been branded “part-man, part-ostrich” over data on excess deaths.
Labour’s shadow public health minister Andrew Gwynne accused the Government of “denial and buck passing” as he warned “as many as 500 people are dying every week waiting for essential care”.
Health minister Maria Caulfield told MPs the UK was ranked “mid table in Europe for mortality figures, comparable with Italy”.
Speaking during Commons health and social care questions, the Labour MP for Denton and Reddish said: “There were 50,000 more deaths than we would have otherwise expected in 2022. Excluding the pandemic that is the worst figure since 1951.
