A blue flash and a whistling call: that's how a kingfisher often announces itself. Kingfishers are mainly birds of streams and rivers with fresh, flowing water, but they also breed in standing water. They dig their nest tunnel on sandy or silty steep banks. Can also be seen in winter in more open and brackish or salt water, looking for enough food - small fish, aquatic insects and the like - and ice-free, clear water to get that food. Severe winters make many victims among the kingfishers.
