Citrus are ‘gross feeders’ - that means they need a lot of nutrients to grow.
They can grow well in a pot but if left too long will look sick and yellow - like the lime tree Tino shows you how - and when - to repot.

PRUNE: Normally you’d prune off any dead, diseased or damaged wood before potting up a plant but this lime is pretty good, so Tino will simply pinch out the flowers, to direct the plant’s energy to getting healthy again instead of trying to produce fruit.
ROOTS: Although the roots are quite condensed, he won’t tease them out as this may stress the plant; citrus don’t like root disturbance. They also have shallow roots, so Tino has chosen a new pot that is the same height as the previous one but wider, allowing the roots to spread out more.
MIX: For the new growing medium, Tino adds half a bucket of compost to some quality potting mix. He puts some in the bottom of the pot, positions the tree, and backfills around it.
- Always put plants in at the same level as they were in the previous pot
- If grafted, always ensure the ‘scar’ or union is above the soil level
- Make sure the top roots are covered by soil
- Don’t pile up the mix to the lip of the pot, otherwise any water and rain will run off, leaving the plant dry.
MULCH: Tino mulches the plant with some straw to help regulate the temperature of the pot and retain moisture. No need to fertilise now - the potting mix and compost are sufficient - instead Tino will fertilise in a couple of weeks when the plant has settled in, and again in the following spring.
However, he waters the plant in with some weak kelp mix to help minimise any transplant shock.
