Severe droughts in Southern Africa, exacerbated by El Niño, have decimated harvests, affecting areas where 70% of the population relies on agriculture. WFP Executive Director McCain described the situation as "alarming and heartbreaking," with millions facing a humanitarian catastrophe. Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, hardest hit, have declared drought disasters, losing 40-80% of their maize harvests. The Southern African Development Community has launched a $5.5 billion humanitarian appeal. WFP needs $409 million for immediate aid and has provided $14 million in anticipatory finance. McCain urges international support to prevent starvation and build resilience for the future.
