This is part one of two videos on the disassembly and reassembly of the entire cooling system to replace the water pump on a 2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 4x4 5.7L with 162 thousand miles, original owner.
We use this truck for pulling a 22' camper trailer and it's made numerous trips all over the country with and without the camper trailer. This 2008 Tundra has been rock solid from the beginning taking us across all major Rocky Mountain passes, on month long trips to the California Coast and on countless trips back to the Midwest for family visits.
Back around November 2019 I smelled burning antifreeze while the truck was warming up in the garage. I knew the smell having owned crappy cars as a kid with radiator fluid leaking into the engine and even one time, a hose blew up on me while sitting in traffic. I knew I needed to figure this out, especially on this age of a truck that is about to head back out to California with our camper trailer going through endless deserts and over 6 major mountain passes throughout the West.
Sure enough there was leaking coming from the water pump...it definitely was coming from the weep hole, so I let it go for a few months to see if it would push out the debris and stop leaking. Then recently I noticed fluid on the garage floor and knew it was time.
I replaced the radiator itself six years ago, along with the belt, hoses, idler pulley and tensioner pulley. Since I'm getting all back in here I'm going to replace it all again regardless of it's condition...I want this truck to last me another 100k if possible, so I was happy to spend the extra money to put new cooling components on at the same time.
Follow along in this part one as I show you step by step how to take apart the entire Tundra cooling system so you can access the water pump. It takes a while, but if you watch the video you should be able to get it out pretty quickly. Part two reinstall video will be up shortly so please subscribe to our channel to get alerted when that happens.
