It is said that Shishimai was born in India. Then, it spread in China, in Southeast Asia, and also in Japan during the late Muromachi period. At first, people used to do the Lion Dance against disease or famine, and later, they started to do this dance also during celebrations and festivals.
We often see Shishimai bite someone on the head. This means that Shishimai eats “bad luck” of people to remove it from them. It is said that you will not fall sick for a whole year if Shishimai bites you on the head, so Shishimai is an indispensable New Year’s ceremony in some regions. It is also said that a Shishimai’s bite at baby’s head will remove bad luck and offer blessings for his/her growth and study. So, when you meet a Shishimai, let him bite you on the head!
