David Mikhail: "How we build world class sustainable housing at scale. Affordably."
We are delighted to welcome David Mikhail to deliver the fourth event in our People, Place Planet series for 2021. Our People, Place, Planet programme showcases the diverse people behind great placemaking, progressive climate action and innovation, continuing with this lecture with David Mikhail.
In this recording, David describes how his architectural practice has evolved its approach to housing and the sustainable agenda.
David talks about the RIBA Stirling Prize winning Goldsmith Street for Norwich City Council, how this project was possible, and what the main challenges were before and during the construction phase. Goldsmith Street demonstrates how to achieve sustainable low rise, high density living. With a shared vision to create a low energy development, the scheme was master planned around these principles from the outset to make best use of solar access and combat fuel poverty for social housing tenants.
David goes on to talk about the practice’s work with York City Council and their Housing Delivery Programme, which will provide 600 homes across seven sites. All homes are being designed by Mikhail Riches and own multi-disciplinary team. The city has set the ambitious target of not only Certified Passivhaus, but Net Zero CO2 in use.
