Ford Transit Camper Van Build Layout - What We'd Do Differently Next Time | 15
We have had this Transit for a couple of years now, and it hasn’t quite worked out how we originally hoped. We had perhaps been watching too many van lifers that were living in their vans full time. So we planned to do a lot more than we really needed, or eventually got around to doing. Once we got the van to a usable state, ie bed, water, bog, we started to take trips.
When we started to think about it, some of the features we were planning, water tanks underneath, shower, fridge and refillable LPG weren't the things that were restricting the use of our van. We found it a bit of a pain finding places to park when we were visiting cities and towns. We realised that we weren’t likely to be going to do longer trips, and for the kind of thing we were doing the van was a bit too big.
The fact you couldn’t use a good number of carparks because of the height of the van caused a problem a few times. It was great parked in the country and in less populated areas, but whenever we went into a town, we seemed to have an issue. Probably more in our mind than reality, but once the thought is there.
We have come to realise that we might prefer a lower van that is a little more stealth-like. So that we can use more car parks and don’t stick out like a sore thumb if we are stopping in a more populated area.
We put a lot of time into getting a van you can stand up in, so it just shows be careful what you wish for. But until you have had a go at something you don’t really have all of the information to make all of the decisions, and sometimes you just have to accept that what you're doing doesn’t suit you, and do something else.
In this video I do show most of the features that we did build in. I was really pleased with the hob and sink unit, and the ceiling coverings worked out really well. When we used the van it worked out really well, for comfort. The investment in the mattresses, 10cm with 2cm of memory foam was wonderful, and I would do that again. The diesel heater soon got rid of the early morning chill, and used so little fuel.
We have now decided to see if we can sell the van as a part, but very usable, done project. And if it sells, get a smaller one. We did find being able to use it as a van was a big bonus, you know how I like to collect bikes :) So we will definitely have that in mind with its replacement. And if it doesn’t sell this year we will still have trips out in it, it really is great if you are parked up in the country.
