Little Dragon: Please Turn
Little Dragon performed at the 14th Annual Independent Music Awards: The SiriusXM Indies on May 10, at Toronto’s Kool Haus during Canadian Music Week 2014.
Among other nuggets, Little Dragon entranced the crowd with “Please Turn” from their 2011 album, Ritual Union. Lead singer Yukimi Nagano’s vocals were pleading before she ever hit the chorus; her magnetic stage presence, primeval dancing and weird hand gestures underscored by otherworldly keyboards created a hypnotic sound that seemed beamed from Mars. With a trippy light show perfectly offsetting an alien Electronica R&B, Little Dragon transported themselves and the crowd to a musical temple at the end of the Universe.
Little Dragon was formed in the mid-nineties, by Swedish high school friends Yukimi Nagano, Erik Bodin, Fredrik Källgren Wallin and Håkan Wirenstrand.
Named for the tantrums that Nagano threw in the studio, they combine R&B, new wave, trip-hop and Swedish folk music into a pleasing, swirling stew. They debuted in 2006 with a single on a Swedish label; they have now released 4 albums, with the most recent, “Nabuma Rubberband”, in 2014 to uniformly positive reviews.
