Alstom has completed the UK's largest ever fleet upgrade, providing a step change in the onboard experience for passengers along one of the country’s most important rail corridors.
Widely regarded as the UK’s hardest-working trains, the Alstom-built Class 390 Pendolinos have served towns and cities along the West Coast Main Line for over 20 years, having collectively travelled the equivalent of more than 12,500 times around the world.
Working in partnership with owner Angel Trains and operator Avanti West Coast, Alstom has now refurbished all 56 Pendolinos using sustainable materials wherever possible – including tables made from recycled plastic bottles – installed 25,500 new Standard Class seats and rolled out 20,000 square metres of new saloon carpet. In total, Alstom refurbished 574 carriages at a rate of one completed train every two weeks.
The award-winning modernisation programme of the iconic train was carried out at the Alstom Technology Centre in Widnes, Cheshire, with 68 additional key suppliers across the UK also contributing to the success of the Pendolino’s mid-life upgrade.
