Next to the three full quartets on our album Open Spaces (al compositions by Garth Knox), we recorded four solo pieces and duets. In this video Annemijn is playing ‘One Finger’.

These four pieces of ‘Open Spaces’ (One Finger, Ten Fingers, Microtonal Blues, Rick O’Shea) come from a collection of concert studies for strings by Garth Knox which explore, what are often referred to, as “extended techniques”.

These are techniques which are already present in classical music in a secondary role, but which have now, through continuous development, come to occupy a musical place of primary importance in today’s music.

Each of the studies concentrates on a single technique (respectively: glissando, pizzicato, microtones, ricochet) investigating how it works technically, and exploring its musical possibilities.
