The presentation to the World Fisheries Congress in Adelaide, Australia (20 to 24 September 2021) narrates the steps leading up to the launch of the small-scale fisheries academy in Senegal to support men and women in the sector who face many challenges. Industrial overfishing and increase of fishmeal production are pitched increasingly against food security and livelihoods of the artisans. The academy helps them to articulate their vision of better, more sustainable lives and livelihoods thanks to more multi-stakeholder cooperation, better planning and collective action. With respectful dialogue and tailor-made innovation the academy provides operational support towards implementing the Voluntary Guidelines to Secure Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries endorsed in 2014 by the FAO Committee of Fisheries.
