I'm so proud of our students! For the 2024 FRC season, they designed and built this robot for picking up the game piece (a 14" foam doughnut called a "Note") and shooting it into one of the targets.
This year's 'bot uses several OAK cameras with onboard machine vision processing (to detect game pieces) and ArduCam cameras to locate AprilTags (similar to QR codes) and estimate the robot's position relative to the field pieces. It's also our first year using the highly-maneuverable "swerve drive": a set of 4 drive modules that turn each wheel in 2 axes (traction + steering). Our module kits came from REV Robotics.
Per the game rules, the robot starts with one Note pre-loaded. As this practice video from last night shows, it successfully shoots & scores once, then picks up an additional Note and scores twice more. This is completely under "autonomous" control, meaning without real-time human input.
This particular run took more than the 15 seconds allotted in the rules for "auto", so the last one wouldn't have counted. Still, they're making progress, and this level of functionality will help a great deal in our next competition.
