Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has criticised Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong's call for recognition of a Palestinian statehood.

Senator Wong during an ANU conference on Tuesday night signalled the Albanese government is considering recognising Palestinian statehood.

“This is clearly a domestic policy decision that is completely wrong and completely misunderstands the reality of the Middle East,” Ms Ley told Sky News Australia.

“So, it's dressed up as a foreign policy decision but what it is chasing Green votes here in Australia.

“This is premature, and it is not the answer for peace in the region for the future.”
