Microfiber vs polyester vs cotton - what are the key differences and what material is best for bed sheets, comforters, pillowcases, clothes, etc?
Let’s settle one thing before we involve cotton. Microfiber and Polyester - what’s the difference between them? Are they the same thing?
Many people find it confusing and here’s the short answer: microfibers are usually made from polyester. However, not all polyester sheets are made with microfibers and not all microfiber bedding is made from polyester. They can be made with polyamides or polyester and polyamide hybrids.
Ok, let’s get this comparison started! Microfiber vs polyester vs cotton - durability. Polyester and microfiber fabric are more durable than cotton. Fabrics made out of polyester are relatively water and dirt-resistant and they retain their color for a longer time.
The only disadvantage is that when reacting to oil, they form stains that are quite difficult to clean. So if there’s a chance of oil spilling on your bed, you should go for cotton instead of polyester. But otherwise, polyester and microfiber outperform cotton when it comes to durability.
Since polyester is water-resistant, it doesn’t hold water and doesn’t become as heavy as cotton when wet. On the other hand, microfiber sheets and comforters are like sponges and can hold up to seven times their weight of water. They also give up water faster too – about three times quicker than cotton bedding and clothes.
This makes microfiber easier to care for, plus it also dries faster than cotton. An added bonus is that polyester and microfibre sheets stay in shape and don’t tend to wrinkle as much as cotton does.
Pilling - over time, all three materials tend to start pilling and it primarily depends on the quality of the fabric. However, if the sheet sets are made with a high thread count (400 TC or more) and come from a good manufacturer, then pilling will be minimal.
Breathability refers to the ease with which air can flow through the fabric. Polyester has quite poor breathability because it tends to trap the heat and hold the moisture inside. It means if you sweat a lot or live in a humid climate, your sweat will not get off your skin quickly.
Cotton, on the other hand, has much better breathability and helps you to get rid of sweat and keeps you cool. Microfibers too like cotton have a better breathability than regular polyester.
Softness - although both cotton and polyester are processed materials, cotton is more natural than polyester that is a completely artificial material. Cotton is very soft on the skin, it also feels warm and cozy.
So if you’re a person who likes to sleep in an old cotton t-shirt because it’s just so comfy, cotton bedding is easily the best pick for you. Polyester and microfiber can cause skin irritation for those with allergies and sensitive skin. So, be sure to avoid them if you’re prone to allergies.
Price - cotton is made from natural resources whereas polyester fabric is man-made (synthetic). That means cotton, especially the luxurious Egyptian and Pima cotton can get very expensive.
Meanwhile, polyester and microfibers can be mass produced at a much faster rate and at a lower production cost making them the cheaper materials.
So, what material is the best? Cotton sheets, pillowcases, comforters and clothes are a more natural option and offer better breathability. However, polyester and microfiber have come a long way and I actually have felt some microfiber bedding that feels better than cheap cotton.
In general though, cotton bedding and clothing feels better on the skin. But Microfiber is more durable than cotton and usually a bit cheaper.
In conclusion, high-quality polyester microfiber products are a great budget alternative to cotton but if you are against chemicals, have allergies, live in a humid place or are a hot sleeper then you should go for the king of fabrics - cotton.
