A NAS (network attached storage) unit is a device which holds one or more hard disks and connects in to your network, giving other devices access to the stored content. They run their own operating system, typically configured through a web browser. Features vary from unit to unit, but many offer things such as RAID support, automated back-ups and P2P downloads, media streaming and remote login, which allows you to access your content from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. Units with more bays can store more content, and they are sold both empty and with hard disks included.
Qnap has been around since 2004 and is best known for its reliable networking products for home and business. NAS, or Network attached storage is becoming increasingly more important to home users as we use, and therefore need to store, larger amounts of digital data.
Qnap NAS devices are essentially an independent computer that is designed to store and share large amounts of your data. This can range from backups of your photos, films, documents and even your whole PC or MAC. You can then access this data from any device on the network or even when you are out and about with an internet connection.
But what does that actually mean to you? Well, you could store all of your films and music on the NAS device, and then you could watch or listen to it on any device you have in your home, even multiple devices at once. This is also the same if you work from home producing audio or video content. Everything can be stored, or backed up to the NAS where it is much safer.
Most NAS devices have more than one slot for hard drives, as you can see the one here has 4 slots. You can set these up in a variety of ways to allow you the maximum possible storage or for extra safety with a RAID setup to duplicate important data across more than one hard disk. That way if one fails your data is still safe.
All current Qnap devices operate on the excellent, easy to use QTS operating system. On here you will find lots of intuitive apps to get the most for your NAS device. Its great for beginners and experts alike as you only use the apps that are relevant to you. That means features that you don’t need don’t get in the way. There are so many features that we just can’t cover them in this video but if you want more detail then you can check out our website or YouTube channel.
In reality everybody should now have a NAS device in their home. It’s the best way to keep control all of your data and share it across all of the devices we now use. Qnap’s range of products provide a simple, easy way into NAS with intuitive software and great reliability so you can just get on with sharing and accessing your data how you want to.
