Legislation
The manner in which an individual can obtain New Zealand citizenship is regulated by the Citizenship Act 1977.

Types of Citizenship
The law provides for 3 main types of citizenship (by birth, by descent or by grant).

Citizenship by Birth
It can be granted only to children born on the New Zealand territory, as long as one of their parents is a New Zealand citizen/permanent resident.
There are other qualifying individuals (Australians, citizens of Cook Islands, etc.).

Citizenship by Descent
It can be offered to persons who are born overseas and who, at the moment when they were born, had a New Zealand national as a parent.

Citizenship by Grant
Citizenship by grant refers to the naturalization process through which a foreigner unrelated to New Zealanders can become a citizen.

Permanent Residency
Citizenship by grant can be acquired by foreigners who became permanent residents of New Zealand.

Days of Residency
For this, they need to have a total of 1,350 days of stay in New Zealand.

The citizenship process can be completed in minimum 3 months, but it can take up to 14 months to become a citizen.
