Danny Greene (November 14, 1933 – October 6, 1977) was an Irish American mobster and associate of the Cleveland mobster John Nardi's during the 1970s gang war for the city's criminal operations. Because of his deep hatred of the Italian controlled Costra Nostra in Cleveland, Greene formed his own crew of young Irish-American gangsters, called "The Celtic Club". His main enforcers were Keith Ritson, Kevin McTaggart, Brian O'Donnell, Danny Greene, Jr., and Billy McDuffy, who set up gambling dens across the city. He also allied with John Nardi, a Cleveland crime family labor racketeer who wanted to overthrow the leadership. In 1976, longtime mobster John Scalish died, leaving control of Cleveland's lucrative criminal operations, specifically the city's Teamsters Union locals, up for grabs. Scalish had appointed James Licavoli as his successor, but other mobsters, such as John Nardi, challenged Licavoli for leadership of the organization. This began the violent rain of terror between the families for control of the Cleveland rackets including 38 car bombings in a single year. Rick Porrello reported in his book, To Kill The Irishman, Greene, using bombs or bullets, killed at least eight of the Mafia hit men sent to assassinate him. On May 17, 1977, Greene's longtime ally John Nardi was killed by a bomb, planted by Pasquale Cisternino and Ronald Carabbia. After Nardi was murdered, mob boss James Licavoli hired hitman Ray Ferritto to take out Greene and grab control of his rackets. Members of the mafia tapped Greene's phone and learned that on Octob-81.6119076706666er 6, 1977, Greene had a dental appointment at the Brainard Place office building in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Upon leaving the building he approached his car when the automobile parked next to his exploded, killing Greene instantly.
In an odd twist of irony, Danny Greene's murder acted as a springboard for an organized crime crackdown; roughly 22 convictions (most within the Italian mob associates) were made in relation to his death. His life inspired several books, including To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia (1998) by Rick Porrello.
Danny Greene was cremated and interred at Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. His ashes were placed above his mother's coffin in Section 10, Lot 152B, Grave 4 (GPS 41.4401640078102, -81.6119076706666). His final resting place does not have a monument or plaque. Interesting to note his mother was only 20 years of age when she died.
