In July 2019, a controversy erupted in Canadian media. One of the biggest newspapers in Canada, the Toronto Star, published a cartoon depicting an Ontario politician in a straitjacket. The politician in question has a mental health history and the resulting outcry led to an apology by the Toronto Star. Using this case study as a jumping off point, this webinar will look at other controversies around mental health in North America, from workplace accommodations to NIMBY attitudes around group homes to treatment of patients in psychiatric hospitals. Our host, Mary-Eleanor Power is joined by Dalhousie and NSCAD instructor, Jay Heisler to discuss. The webinar will begin with a primer on the controversy and move on to the other major controversies in the field in North America today. The webinar will end by recommending some steps for appropriate media discourse and workplace conduct. Participants will be able to say on their CVs and to friends and family that they have challenged their biases and gained insights on everything from what they see in the media to their workplaces.
As of April 28, 2021, we are now known as the Faculty of Open Learning & Career Development.
