Hi everyone. Aiden here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Yakima SkinnyWarrior Rooftop Basket here on our 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. So a rooftop basket is gonna have some pretty obvious benefits in terms of carrying extra stuff with you. Whether you've got that third row of seats up and you're limited on cargo space, you need some extra places to put things, or you've got some stuff that you just don't wanna store inside the vehicle, whether it be smelly or messy, keep that mess outside. A rooftop basket is a great way to go because it gets you a lot of extra space without adding any length to your vehicle or needing a hitch.
Now where this one is kind of different is the form factor. It's a lot longer and thinner, kind of like the name suggests. So it's going to be 58 inches long and 23 inches wide. And where that can come in really handy is storing other things on your roof rack. Let's say maybe you've got some bikes up there, or a kayak.
You've got tons of space on the cross bars with this basket installed still, so there's room for other accessories if you need it. And from this angle, you can really see how much space you're saving. Now our roof rack does have some crossbar overhang on each side, and we are utilizing that to mount to with the basket. So keep that in mind if your roof rack's a little bit different and maybe it doesn't have an overhang. But with our setup today, we're leaving over half of our roof rack still available for different clamp-on accessories.
So if we did have something large like a kayak, there's plenty of room to mount it upright with maybe a J-style carrier, or even maybe get one to two bikes up here depending on our weight restrictions. That is pretty important when you're mounting all this stuff on your roof rack that you don't exceed its capacity. The basket itself has a 165 pound capacity, but with your roof rack, you wanna factor in the weight of everything loaded in the basket, plus the basket itself, before you start mounting other things on the roof rack as well. If you find yourself needing more length, the Grand Cherokee L certainly has the roof space for it. You can pick up a 16 inch extension that will mount up in the middle of the carrier, or you can get that just right out of the gate kitted together with this in a longer version.
So if you want extra space, you can get it. The faring up front is removable. That's going to help with wind noise when you're going down the road. Keep in mind, anything mounted to your roof is gonna have some wind noise. This is just to help at not necessarily completely eliminate it. Now it's removable because if you wanted to, you could pass some items through here. You can see kind of on the back of the basket here that gap that we're working with. That same gap is gonna be on the front if we remove that faring. So if there's anything longer, maybe we've got some two by fours that we just picked up from the hardware store, you can pass that through the basket and utilize all this space's extra contact points to keep that from bending or catching too much wind when they go down the road. Now the installation here is completely tool free. We've got these hand knobs up top with a clamp underneath. These can be moved between the bars to get a different spread. Right now we've got ours mostly centered up, and just because of the fixed nature of where those clamps can go, you're not always gonna get a perfect fit. You can see our clamps here aren't perfectly centered with the crossbars. That's just kind of the nature of our crossbars having fixed mounting points. And then the same thing with the carrier. But other than that, it still gets a really solid fit and you've got plenty of spots to choose from if you want to kind of shift it towards the front or back a little bit. You have plenty of options for tie down points on the basket. All of these smaller bars make for great spots for hooks, or just wrapping your straps around. And although these top bars and the very base bars are a little bit thick, maybe too thick for an S-hook on any ratchet straps or cam buckle straps, Yakima does make a net that is designed to stretch over this particular basket or the longer variant as well. We've tested that out and it works really well for securing a large amount of cargo and jus
