Tonight will see Catalonia’s biggest nocturnal festival of fire and food celebrated quite differently due to Covid-19, while authorities warn new outbreaks in neighbouring regions could affect parts of Catalonia.
Coronavirus outbreaks in the region of Aragon could affect neighbouring parts of Catalonia according to Spain’s health emergencies director, while new cases were detected at a Lleida care home. The Spanish govt says it is not considering reactivating the state of alarm in the near future but could do so if there was a serious surge in cases.
Spain’s National Court is investigating another four pro-independence activists for alleged terrorist activity and has summoned them, along with two others, to a hearing on June 30. Nine CDR members were arrested in September, seven of which spent some months in provisional detention.
A ruling is expected on the extradition case of pro-independence former Catalan minister Lluís Puig, who has been in exile since October 2017, on August 7 of this year. He rejects accusations of misusing public funds, and it is the third attempt Spain has made to extradite him.
Almost 2,300 plants in Barcelona’s famous Liceu opera house were serenaded by a string quartet, highlighting the importance of audiences in the arts in the post-pandemic world. The plants will be gifted to medical professionals who worked on the front line against Covid-19.
Barcelona beach will see no crowds of people tonight for a very different Sant Joan celebration this year. As part of the measures against the coronavirus crisis, the facilities will be closed to the public this year, however that won’t stop people from enjoying fireworks, bonfires, and the tasty traditional ‘coques’ pastries.
