সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়ন ভেঙ্গে গেছে আজ থেকে প্রায় দুই দশকেরও বেশি সময় আগে। কিন্তু সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়ন ভেঙে যাওয়ার পরে অনেক ইউরোপীয় দেশ, যারা তৎকালীন সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের অংশ ছিল তারা এখনো পর্যন্ত চলমান অর্থনৈতিক সমস্যায় ভুগছে। তবে ইউরোপীয় দেশগুলো অর্থনৈতিকভাবে এতো বেশি শক্তিশালী যে, তাদের সবচেয়ে গরীব দেশের মাথাপিছু আয় পৃথিবীর অন্যান্য মহাদেশের গরীব দেশের আয়ের তুলনায় অনেক ওপরে। তবে এই মহাদেশের বেশিরভাগ দেশ অতি উন্নত হওয়ার কারনে এইসব দেশের সমপর্যায়ে যেতে তুলনামূলক গরীব দেশগুলোকে আরো অনেক দূর যেতে হবে।
