Filmmakers have long looked to the future, marking out a date just far enough down the line to allow us to dream about what might happen 30, 40, 50 years from now. (And jetpacks or no jetpacks, a few of them have gotten surprisingly close too.) But put a specific year or date on a sci-fi movie, and you might as well be marking its expiration date. Because after we hit that “best before” date, we can’t help but laugh at just how far off base those “futures” look in hindsight -- a flying car with a tape deck? Nice try.
