In 1833 the first Steam Machine in Spain started to work in the Bonaplata brother's factory, very close to the medieval walls and the taller streets. Huge profits were made from the tobacco, sugar, cacoa markets but also from the slaves markets too, those had served to started the industry of the iron, paper, printed cotton fabric: the popular Indian.
The Raval turned from being a farmland and convent to see how the landscape got full of factories and belching smokestacks. At the same time the traditional cores like the Gothic, the Ribera, San Pedro and Santa Catalina also were building factories used by steam.
