On July 16-17, 1942, the Jews of Paris were rounded up by French police under the orders of the Nazis. Thousands of people were held for days in the Vélodrome d’Hiver, an indoor sports arena, before being deported. It was the largest deportation of Jews from France. Most were eventually sent to Auschwitz where they were killed.
