During 1990, gang violence in Vancouver escalated following a drug transaction gone sour. A Russian gang had reputedly arranged to purchase quarter million dollars of cocaine from the local Hells Angels chapter. The transaction ended badly when the drugs were snatched without corresponding payment. Their tactic proved lethal to the fate of the Russian gang.
In May, gangster Sergey Filonov would be gunned down outside the popular Tev Deelys motorcycle outlet. His brother was struck down by a hammer, but survived the attack. He refused to cooperate with police investigators. One by one, each of the Russian mobsters involved in the transaction would be systematically and violently murdered. One member escaped death with bombs planted in two of his cars. He later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a hotel room in Mexico City. Another member would be kidnapped, but his body never recovered. The bloodshed eventually ended when each of the Russian mobsters was liquidated. The drugs would never resurface.
